Devastating fires have plagued people for thousands of years. In modern times, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people are maimed or killed by massive fires each year worldwide, and property worth billions of dollars is lost. |
Human lives and money are not the only losses to wildfires.

In the US wildfires are often associated only with the west. The US Bureau of Land
Management Map here shows that wildfire is much more extensive.

1. Wildfires are a growing hazard in the US. 2. Wildfires pose losses to both life and property and is particularly highlighted where ecosystems meet developed areas. 3. Wildfires blackening acres are on the rise and have set new records for acre burned levels. 4. Wildfire suppression responsibilities have routinely fallen on the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for protection of federal lands. 5. During the 2000 wildfire season, wildfires burned in 16 states consuming more than 7 million acres of public forests. |
6. Forest Service National Fire Plan funding for 2002 totaled more than $2 billion. 7. In 2005, the Forest Service spent nearly $200 million on aviation wildfire suppression. 8. Between 2000 and 2006 there were over 77,000 wildfires in the US burning over 6.9 million acres. 9. In October 2007, widespread wildfires left 2,000 homes destroyed and 500,000 acres burned and approximately 640,000 residents were evacuated and 14 people died. They caused more than $2.2 billion in claims upon private insurance companies. 10.Federal wildfire funding has increased to $4.1 billion for the 2009 budget. |
